How much revenue are missed calls costing you?

A restaurant that takes 100 calls a week and misses 25% of them loses about $3,223 a month, because an estimated 85% of callers who reach voicemail buy somewhere else. Run your own numbers below - the calculator is free, updates live, and nothing you type leaves your browser.

Methodology

How the math works

Lost revenue per month = calls per week x calls you miss (%) x missed callers who buy elsewhere (%) x average sale value x 52 / 12. The yearly figure is the same weekly loss x 52, and missed calls per month is calls per week x calls you miss (%) x 52 / 12.

For restaurants, average sale value is your average phone order (default $35). For hotels and motels it is the average booking: nightly rate x average nights per stay (defaults $110 x 1.8 nights, about $198 per lost booking). With the restaurant defaults - 100 calls a week, 25% missed, 85% lost to competitors, $35 ticket - the model shows roughly $3,223 lost per month and $38,675 per year.

About that 85%: the claim that "85% of callers who reach voicemail do not call back" is an industry estimate that has circulated in telecom and answering-service research for years, not a peer reviewed statistic for your specific business. We surface it as a sensible default and keep the field editable; even at a cautious 50%, a busy line usually leaks four figures a month.

The model is deliberately conservative: it ignores repeat visits, lifetime value, catering and group bookings, and the review a frustrated caller leaves after ringing out. Your real number is likely higher.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

It is a long-circulated industry estimate that about 85% of callers who reach voicemail do not call back, repeated across telecom and answering-service research rather than one definitive study. Treat it as a planning default: the field is editable, and even at 50% a busy line typically leaks four figures a month.

Published studies and phone-system vendor data commonly put restaurant missed-call rates between 20% and 30%, and higher during peak hours, which is why the calculator defaults to 25%. Count yesterday's missed calls on your phone and enter your real number for a tighter estimate.

Lost revenue per month = calls per week x calls missed (%) x missed callers who buy elsewhere (%) x average sale value x 52 / 12. For hotels the average sale value is nightly rate x average nights per stay ($110 x 1.8 by default). The yearly figure multiplies the same weekly loss by 52.
